#MyGloriousGardens week 4. Let’s Link up!

Well, here we are and it’s week 4 of #MyGloriousGardens Link party! Thank you to all of you that have waited to Link up! It’s been a busy few weeks here in the old house.

As many of you know, I love my Gardens and Gardening! Summer is here and it’s time to celebrate all things garden related!

This Linky is to celebrate all garden photos and posts. Anything garden related can be posted. It may be a post about a great day out with your family, a garden you have visited, your garden, a garden product or an outdoor place you have visited. I don’t mind anything as long as it is celebrating a Glorious Garden! No posts about other Link parties please. I have posted 2 this week just because!

If you have never been to a Link party before it’s easy!

Here is a great guide to what a Link party is……what is a linky?

Just link up your post by clicking on the blue Inlink up button. Copy and paste the url of your post/s or photo in the first box. Then click on the second box and it will fill in automatically. Add your contacts or a – and you have done it!

There are minimal rules (and I’m not really worried if you don’t all stick to them!).
1. Tweet me @oldhouseinthes1 for a Retweet.
2. Follow me on Twitter, on the blog and on Instagram.
3. Comment on my post and one other of your choice.
4. Spread the Blog love by reading and commenting on other people’s posts and I will read all posts and comment. I will share all on my social media sites.
5. Have fun!

If you would like to add my button to your posts, the code is on my widget (side area) underneath my social media sites. You just copy and paste this code into the HTML part when writing a post.

The Unique Blogger Award

I’ve never had a Unique Blogger Award before so thank you so much to Cherylene from Living Vs existing For nominating me! How fun and exciting!

Cherylene is such a positive and motivating blogger! She describes herself as, “a woman who has refused to let the negativity in my life and the world at large hold me back from pursuing my dreams.” How amazing!

I particularly like Cherylene’s Health and Wellness Fridays. Perhaps because by Friday, I’m looking for a bit of health advice before I reach for the wine!

‘Thanks again Cherylene. I really appreciate this nomination. ❤️

My questions from Cherylene.

1. What do you think is the most unique thing about your blog?

Perhaps my variety? I’m not sure. I hope that readers like the variety in my posts anyway!
Use one word to describe your blog. Eclectic!
Other than blogging what else brings you the most joy? My family, my class, my pets and my garden and that is in no particular order!

The Rules

Share the link of the blogger who has shown love to you by nominating you.
Answer the questions.
In the spirit of sharing love and solidarity with our blogging family, nominate 8-13 people for the same award.
Ask them 3 questions.

My Nominees

So…what now?

What do you think is the most unique thing about YOU as a person?

Other than blogging, what takes up your spare time?
If you were invisible for the day, what would you do?

I understand that not everyone chooses to be a part of the award nomination process. By nominating the following blogs, I am able to show thanks and appreciation for the contributions you all make on a daily basis. If you choose to take part, that is fantastic because I would love to read your answers! If not, no worries! Just keep writing… 🙂

Tips for New Bloggers

I have learnt so much as a new blogger in the past 9 months!

I thought I would share my top 5 tips for all beginner bloggers. I hope they prove useful to you!

1. Write, write and write some more! Writing will help you find your style and that is what will help to bring readers to your site. If you are writing interesting or readable posts, readers will come back for more.

2. Connect with other bloggers. I found many on my social media sites. Read lots of different blogs and write comments. I spend most evenings reading and commenting on other people’s blogs as it’s such a great way to meet people! Other bloggers are a friendly bunch and most will offer advice if you ask. Be yourself. It’s great to get ideas from other bloggers but you do need to find your own voice. It has taken me a good few months to feel really happy with the direction of my blog and that’s ok. You may play around with your blog for a while and that’s ok too! A piece of friendly advice though, add social media buttons to your blog. Others may not want to follow you as an email subscriber but they may follow you on Instagram or Twitter.

3. Link up at link parties or using Linky badges. They are hosted at other bloggers site (I have a garden one) and you can read a variety of posts from bloggers who have also linked up. My favourites are on my widget (the side panel). They are a fun way to connect with others and I love the fact that I’m connecting with some of the same bloggers each week so you begin to feel part of a blogging community.

Design

4. Do you like this badge? I know the bicycle has nothing to do with blogging! I just love the photo! I made this using Canva. This is a graphic design service where you can drop and select pictures, photos and texts to create badges, social media graphics and invites. It has lots of layouts already so it’s really simple and slightly addictive!

5. Find free photos at unsplash a great site if you need a free photo. There are loads on this site and you don’t have to worry about copyright. Photos do make your post more interesting for your reader. I have also learnt that if you click on the photo, you can add a comment to it.

Blogging tips from the oldhouseintheshires

I hope you found this useful. Please do contact me if you want any help. I will give it if I can. I’m still learning too but I would be interested if you agree with my 5 tips.

My blog is not self hosted yet. I will attempt this one day but for now I am with WordPress and am very happy with it. There is a great community using WordPress so you could also pop along to the Community pool to meet other bloggers.

Good luck!

Keep Calm and Carry On Linking Sunday

Am I an “inbetween” blogger?

I’ve committed blogging suicide apparently. According to every “How to get ahead in blogging” type post you must have a niche. Well, I don’t.

I’m not really a Parenting blog. Yes, I blog about life with my teens or the occasional post about when my children were younger. But that is not all I blog about.

I’m not really an Educational blog. Yes, I blog about educational things. Being a teacher means that these things do come up but I wouldn’t describe my blog as an educational site.

I’m not really a Gardening blog. I love gardening and gardens but I don’t only blog about these things. Gardening is my hobby and I love it.

adam-jang-260876 (1)

So, this has left me with a dilemma.

Do I carry on as I am and blog about all the things above or specialise in just one? I’ve been blogging for 7 months now and I’m still finding my way but do I really need a niche?

Well, I’ve decided that I love all of the above so I’m now renaming myself an “in between” blogger. I’m ok with that! Are you? If you like what you read, keep visiting the old house!
This old house blogs about gardening, garden visits, parenting dilemmas, mamas randoms and educational tips.

My blog has had a make over! What do you think?

There will be a new link party starting the first week of July -come and join in! #MyGloriousGardens

WEEK 2 ROUND UP

Thank you to the 9 link ups we had this week! That’s amazing! Thank you to all who linked up. I really enjoyed reading all of your posts. I do hope to see you again. x

Thattravelladyinhershoes

Thank you Cady for linking for the second time. This post was about The Charleston Farmhouse in Sussex once owned by Virginia Woolf’s sister, Vanessa Stephen Bell. I love a bit of history don’t you? So combining this with a beautiful garden was a perfect read for me! Thank you Cady.

DIYHome&Garden

This post from Deborah’s site was very useful at this time of year! Especially the use of different plants to stop those pesky mosquito bites! I love all the different plants she suggested, so thank you”

growingself

This post really warmed me as Road talks about when she was little girl and how she was fascinated by small things. Being inspired as a child stays with us doesn’t it? I used to sit for hours watching my pond as a child so may be that’s why I love nature so much!  Thank you Roda for the beautiful photos too! Roda also linked up a post about a visit to the Chicago Botanic gardens. More stunning photos and I loved the paper bark maple as I’d never seen one before.

30daysofwildparenting

I just love this idea followed by fellow teacher, Joshua with his family including his adorable little girl, Alice (who is too cute!). Thank you for linking and I will look forward to reading your blog in the future.

rivendell blog

Thank you to John for linking for a second time with a post about his stunning roses, some of which I haven’t come across before. The “Rhapsody in Blue” rose looks so pretty so hopefully he will share more pictures of this one in the future. My roses never seem to do well so I will be looking to him for more advice!

SultanaBun

This was one of the first blogs I found. I love all the recipes you see! Lynda has linked a fabulous post about all things Elderflower! Yum! I even tried the Gooseberry and Elderflower jam and its delicious. Thank you for linking up.

MSnubutterlies

Again, Shannon linked up last week as we saw how her garden was her daily motivation in her battle with MS. This was the second garden post (and I know that there is a 3rd!) and although Shannon lives in a very hot place, her garden is thriving. So glad to see how it’s going, Shannon. Thank you for posting again.

Watchingthedaisies

The lovely Brigid! Thank you for linking for the second time. Brigid linked a post about her own garden which although fairly new is looking as if it has always been there! I love seeing what people have in their garden through their photographs don’t you? Maybe I’m just nosy!

After a little thought over the weekend. I have decided to postpone the linky and have it once a month instead. I am writing reports at the moment and its all a bit bonkers at school. I hope everyone understands. x
#MyGloriousGardens will be back.

Blue Sky Nomination and playing it forward.

I drew you in with a gorgeous pictures of Dottie. Sadly, this is not a Dottie post…..

I have been tagged by Deborah over at DIYHome & Garden! Thank you lovely lady. The link to her site is

Here

I met Deborah through my Linky #MyGloriousGardens when she kindly agreed to support my new Link party. She lives in North Carolina in the US and blogs about her projects whether they are upcyling furniture or making homemade goodies using home produce. It’s interesting for me that I now get as much traffic to my blog from the US as the UK so “Howdie!” all you lovely people over there.

The Blue Sky Tag is a fun June event for bloggers, and I’m thrilled to be nominated to participate. So, I guess I am “it.”

THE RULES

Give 11 questions.
Tag 11 people.
Answer the 11 questions given to you.
Don’t forget to thank the person who tagged you.

HERE ARE MY QUESTIONS

Why did you start blogging? I started blogging to fill the “mum” gap now that my children are teenagers. I’m only working part time this academic year as a teacher so I thought blogging would “give me something to do!” It sure has!
If you could meet any historical person, from any era, dead or alive, whom would it be? Wow, great question. I am a massive history nerd so I would have to say, Queen Elizabeth the first as she really rocked being a woman in that era. Or I would say, Hitler to ask him, why?
When is your most productive time of the day for writing, and why? It’s usually the evening to be honest as I’ve eaten (very important!), I’ve been able to get out all day in the garden or been to work and everyone is fed. Then I know that I can just get on.
Who is the biggest fan of your blog (other than yourself)? To be honest, I’ve no idea! I think possibly my hubbie? He’s very supportive but is super busy so I don’t think he reads many posts.
What do you find the most challenging about blogging? Giving enough attention to each comment. Sometimes I have lots of comments to read in the morning (thank you lovely US people again!) and I need to do the school run, walk the dog, go to work….you know how it is!
How many pets do you have? One dog called Dottie (although I sometimes post about Primrose, sadly she’s not mine!), 2 old cats called Tilly and Tiger, a resident hedgehog called Hubbard and lots of frogs in the pond!
How do you unwind at the end of the day? I’m English! It’s a cuppa every time! Often with cake…..😋
What do you hope to accomplish by the end of 2017? Good question! I would like my family and I to carry on being healthy and happy. Simple pleasures!
Chocolate or strawberry ice cream? I’m not a massive fan to be honest now if it was cake…….
What’s your biggest fear? To lose a loved one.
Choose one of the following vacations: an oasis in the desert, a tropical island, or a chalet in the mountains. It has to be mountains every time! I just love the views and fresh air.

What is your least favourite part about blogging?

How long do you spend blogging each day?

#MyGloriousGarden Linky week 2.

Hello and welcome to #MyGloriousGardens Linky week 2.

Thank you so much to the Linkers from last week.
We had 8 linkers. All posts were fabulous so I wont be picking favourites!

Crummymummy wrote about the development of her wildlife garden with Homebase plants. I loved her homes for hedgehogs and the way she involved her children. I will be following her new garden with interest.

wildaboutnauture linked her photography post about her garden. I love seeing what people plant don’t you? I loved her globe alliums.

CadyLuckLeedy shared her visit to The Gardens of Mainz in Germany. She and I have bonded over our visits to different gardens I think! Again, photos tells more than words sometimes and this post was all about that Magnolia in my opinion! Stunning.

Rivendellgarden This is John Kingdon’s site. He is a brilliant man in that he collates all the gardening blogs in one place for us all! I’m featuring this month so thank you John. Do pop over to his site to find out more.

OfftheEdgeGardening A lovely post about Gill’s revisit to a garden from her past with her Plant Heritage group. I love the way she has captured the weeping Irises.

Sowhatnow768 A fun post about the Linkers (I know her name but I think she would like to stay anonymous!) introduction of her chickens with fabulous names! I read this blog often and she always makes me laugh!

Msnubutterflies Such a fabulous post. How a garden became the daily inspiration for Shannon as she battles with MS. I love how uplifting this post was and how it made me see that the little things are as important. There is a part 2 to this post so I hope Shannon links again!

Watchingthedaisies posted 3 posts and all were Glorious! Thank you Brigid! I particularly love her post about The healing Power of Gardens and seeing her garden that she has transformed into a paradise! I agree that gardens and outdoor spaces can be so rewarding and calming. Brigid has a book out so she knows her stuff!

I’ve got a Blogger Recognition Award! Whoop Whoop!

blogger-recognition-award-logo

Wow! I’ve been nominated for my first Blogger Award bt a fellow Blogger and I’m super excited!

Thank you to “I’m a horrible mum and you are too!” for the nomination! Here is a link to her site:

https://imahorriblemomandyouaretoo.wordpress.com/home/

Since I’ve been nominated, here are the rules:

  • Thank the blogger who nominated you and provide a link to their blog.
  • Write a post to show your award.
  • Give a brief story of how your blog started.
  • Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers.
  • Select 15 other bloggers for this award.
  • Comment on each of their blogs, letting them know they’re nominated and linking back to this post.

How My Blog Started:  My blog got started because I love writing but I had never had the confidence or time to make a start. I have to admit that the technology bit scared me too! I saw that other people I knew were blogging and were enjoying it, so I thought, Why not? We moved house last year and I wanted to document the changes we made to the house and garden. I then started to make lifestyle and parenting posts just from my own experience and these were popular. I’m just going with the flow at the moment to see where this blogging thing takes me. I still work as a teacher and am a mum too so I am super busy! Blogging is my way of doing something for me.

#1 Piece of Advice to New Bloggers:  Write what YOU love. Don’t be swayed by STATs or how many people are reading your posts. That is not the point of blogging.

#2 Piece of Advice to New Bloggers:  Your blog will evolve and that’s ok too. I’m always playing around with the look of mine or the kind of posts I write. It will find its own niche.

The 15 Bloggers I Have Nominated:
